ist so eng in den dritten Hof eingedrungen, dass es schwierig ist, einen Gesamteindruck von diesem chaotischen gotischen Bauwerk zu bekommen. Sein asymmetrisches Erscheinungsbild ist das Produkt einer langen und wechselvollen Geschichte, denn obwohl der Grundstein bereits 1344 gelegt wurde, wurde die Kathedrale erst fertiggestellt 1929<\/strong> \u2013 Genau 1000 Jahre nach dem Tod von<\/strong> B\u00f6hmens ber\u00fchmtester Schutzpatron, Wenzel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

An der Stelle der heutigen Kathedrale befand sich urspr\u00fcnglich ein Opferaltar f\u00fcr den heidnischen Fruchtbarkeitsgott Svantovit, was zum Teil erkl\u00e4rt, warum die erste Kirche, die 929 von F\u00fcrst Wenzel gegr\u00fcndet wurde, dem Heiligen Vitus (tschechisch svat\u00fd Vt) geweiht war. Vitus exorzierte angeblich den Sohn des Kaisers Diokletian und galt seitdem als Schutzpatron der Epileptiker und der an der Krampferkrankung Sydenhams Chorea leidenden Menschen (daher der popul\u00e4re Name St.-Veits-Tanz). Die Inspiration f\u00fcr die mittelalterliche Kathedrale kam von Kaiser Karl IV. (1346\u201378), der, als er noch Thronfolger war, nicht nur ein unabh\u00e4ngiges Erzbistum f\u00fcr Prag durchsetzte, sondern es auch schaffte, die Reliquien des Heiligen Vitus zu sammeln.<\/p>\n
