Mucha’s Slav Epic, Kupka’s first abstractions and the Czech cubists \u2014 where to see the country’s greatest art.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Czech art has an odd international profile: one artist everybody recognises without knowing his name, and a dozen who deserve to be far better known. Alfons Mucha’s posters are on student walls worldwide; František Kupka helped invent abstract painting and is barely a footnote outside the country. Here is who matters, and where their work hangs.<\/p>\n

Alfons Mucha (1860–1939)<\/h2>\n

The definitive Art Nouveau artist, made famous overnight by a Sarah Bernhardt poster in 1894 Paris. He resented being remembered for it. His real ambition was the Slav Epic<\/strong>: twenty enormous canvases on Slavic history, painted over eighteen years and given to the city of Prague. He also designed the stained glass in St Vitus Cathedral and the first Czechoslovak banknotes.<\/p>\n

František Kupka (1871–1957)<\/h2>\n

One of the first painters anywhere to abandon representation entirely. Amorpha: Fugue in Two Colours<\/em> was shown in Paris in 1912, at the very beginning of abstract art. He is represented at the Veletržní palác in Prague.<\/p>\n

The Czech cubists<\/h2>\n

Prague produced the world’s only cubist architecture<\/strong> — buildings, lampposts, furniture and even a cubist café. Josef Gočár<\/strong>’s House at the Black Madonna is the landmark. Nothing quite like it exists anywhere else.<\/p>\n

Later figures<\/h2>\n

Toyen<\/strong> (Marie Čermínová) was central to Czech surrealism. Josef Čapek<\/strong>, brother of the writer, was a painter and illustrator who died in Bergen-Belsen. Jan Švankmajer<\/strong> carried the surrealist line into film.<\/p>\n
