Der Friedhof liegt am s\u00fcd\u00f6stlichen Rand der Stadt zwischen den Stra\u00dfen N\u00e1dra\u017en\u00ed und Rybni\u010dn\u00ed. Es wurde im 16. Jahrhundert von der Chewra-Kadischa-Bruderschaft gegr\u00fcndet. Der Friedhof wurde 1886 modernisiert und 1902 um einen neuen Zeremoniensaal erweitert.<\/p>\n

W\u00e4hrend des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde der Friedhof durch die Nazis zerst\u00f6rt und erlitt auch bei der Bombardierung der Stadt im Jahr 1945 gro\u00dfe Sch\u00e4den. Derzeit befinden sich auf einer Fl\u00e4che von ca. 5.832 m 2 rund 600 Grabsteine. Vorrangig barock und klassizistisch, ansonsten auch modern. Bei den Rettungsarbeiten wurde eine \u00fcberraschende Entdeckung gemacht. Gefunden wurde der Grabstein des wohl ber\u00fchmtesten Einheimischen \u2013 Rafael K\u00f6nig, der als erster Jude in der \u00f6sterreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie vom Kaiser die Erlaubnis erhielt, au\u00dferhalb des Ghettos ein Gewerbe zu betreiben und zu leben und den Meistertitel zu f\u00fchren. Sein intakter Grabstein, einschlie\u00dflich eines Bildnisses, wurde 1999 bei Rettungsarbeiten auf dem j\u00fcdischen Friedhof in der N\u00e1dra\u017en\u00ed-Stra\u00dfe zuf\u00e4llig entdeckt.<\/p>\n
