It is a unique collection of 123 preserved houses. Among them are, for example, 2 synagogues, a Jewish museum, the building of the Jewish town hall, the rabbinate, an almshouse, a hospital and two schools. The Jewish Quarter is freely accessible.<\/p>\n

All three UNESCO monuments in T\u0159eb\u00ed\u010d are connected by the educational trail “In the footsteps of abbots and rabbis” , which will reveal something about the life of the two religious communities that lived in close proximity for centuries in T\u0159eb\u00ed\u010d. Here, visitors can visit the Back Synagogue and the Seligmann Bauer House . Groups of 5 people or more can also use the services of a guide on two circuits, the condition is to make a reservation two days in advance. Circuit 1 includes the Back Synagogue and a guided tour of the Jewish Quarter. Circuit 2 is extended by a tour of the Jewish cemetery.<\/p>\n

The first mention of a Jewish settlement in T\u0159eb\u00ed\u010d appears in 1338 in the so-called Nuremberg Martyrology. It is evident from this document that Jews lived in the territory of T\u0159eb\u00ed\u010d at the time. However, it was not a large community, or even a ghetto, but several families living in different places in the city. Over the centuries, the Podkl\u00e1\u0161te\u0159\u00ed district, where the Jewish quarter is located today, was settled completely naturally. We can talk about a ghetto, in the true sense of the word, only since 1723, when a law was passed stating that Jews must live in ghettos .<\/p>\n

It should be remembered that in the territory of T\u0159eb\u00ed\u010d there was never a controlled repression against the local Jews. On the contrary. proof of this can be the fact that when the aforementioned law came,Christians living in the territory of the Jewish quarter “only” exchanged houses with Jews living outside the gates of the ghetto. This Christian tolerance was one of the reasons that led to the district’s inclusion on the UNESCO list . After 1850, the removal of the population began to take place as a result of reforms that allowed Jews to move freely. The local Jews left for trade in larger cities. During the Second World War, they were deported to the Terez\u00edn ghetto and subsequently to various concentration camps, mainly to Auschwitz. Only a few people came back. However, the original Jewish community was no longer restored.<\/p>\n

The Jewish Museum in T\u0159eb\u00ed\u010d is located in the renovated Selingmann Bauer House next to the synagogue. The museum presentsthe life of a true Jewish family and the functioning of its household. The exhibition includes a Jewish shop, a sample of Jewish housing with a place where the shop owners cooked, as well as the historic entrance to the women’s gallery of the synagogue and modern lecture rooms.<\/p>\n

The Jewish quarter, together with the Jewish cemetery , was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 2003.<\/p>\n
