From 1940 to 1945, the small fortress of Terez\u00edn functioned as a prison of the Prague Gestapo. In 1994, a new permanent exhibition on the history of the police prison was opened in the Small Fortress.<\/p>\n
The small fortress of Terez\u00edn served as a prison for military and political prisoners as early as the 19th century. After March 15, 1939, when Hitler occupied Czechoslovakia and a protectorate was declared, the Nazis noticed the advantages of the building and in June 1940 they established a police prison here. In five years, 32,000 men and women passed through the gates of the Small Fortress. Life for the prisoners here was harsh; they were often forced to work for the empire outside the fortress. From 1943, executions were carried out here on the basis of “Sonderbehandlung” – without trial.<\/p>\n
The exhibition bears witness to the persecution of the Czech nation under the Nazi regime in World War II and records the fates of Czech prisoners taken to other concentration camps on the territory of the Nazi German Empire. Short-term exhibitions are also held in the Small Fortress, and documentary films can be watched in the local cinema.<\/p>\n
35,000 prisoners died in Terez\u00edn. The dead were first buried in the area of \u200b\u200bthe Bohu\u0161ovice basin, where the Jewish cemetery was gradually established. The national cemetery in front of the Little Fort was established artificially only after the war. A total of 2,386 individual urn and skeleton graves and five mass graves, in which thousands of others are buried, are a reminder of the horrors committed in Terez\u00edn during the Second World War. In total, about 10,000 people are buried here. The National Cemetery was established in 1945. Over the years, more ashes of human victims were found in the cemetery. As late as 1958, a grave with human ashes was found near the Richard underground factory. In November 1944, the Nazis ordered the destruction of the urns, which were still kept in the columbarium. Most of the ashes were scattered in Ohra in the places where the stylized stone urn is located today.<\/p>\n
