Nov\u00fd Sv\u011bt: The Lane Behind Prague Castle<\/h2>\n

Five minutes from the Castle’s northern gate, Nový Sv\u011bt (“New World”) is a curving cobbled lane of small baroque houses that looks almost unchanged since the 18th century. There is no market here and that is the point — just candlelight in the windows, the occasional smell of mulled wine from someone’s kitchen, and almost no one else. Go after dark. It is the single best-kept December walk in the city, and it costs nothing.<\/p>\n

Vy\u0161ehrad: The Fortress Above the River<\/h2>\n

South of the centre, Vy\u0161ehrad offers wide views over a frozen-looking Vltava and a cemetery where half of Czech cultural history is buried. A small pop-up market sometimes appears near the basilica in Advent. Even without it, the walls at sunset are worth the metro ride, and there is space to breathe.<\/p>\n

Ji\u0159\u00edho z Pod\u011bbrad and the Vinohrady Markets<\/h2>\n

Two neighbourhood squares in Vinohrady run their own Advent markets, and both feel like a different city from Old Town. N\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed M\u00edru<\/strong> (20 November – 24 December, 10:00–20:00) sits in front of the neo-Gothic St Ludmila Church with around 60 stalls. A few tram stops away, Ji\u0159\u00edho z Pod\u011bbrad<\/strong> has a smaller weekly market under the striking modernist Church of the Most Sacred Heart. Courtyards and Passages in the Old Town<\/h2>\n

The Old Town is threaded with covered passages (pas\u00e1\u017ee<\/em>) that most people walk straight past. Try the courtyard of the Clam-Gallas Palace, the passages off Ryt\u00ed\u0159sk\u00e1, and the quiet yard behind the Bethlehem Chapel. Where Locals Warm Up<\/h2>\n

Skip the stalls for an hour and sit down. Caf\u00e9s locals visit during winter nights<\/a> covers the neighbourhood places — but as a starting point, look for the old taverns around Rudolfinum and Mal\u00e1 Strana that serve v\u00e1no\u010dka<\/em>, carp soup and hot honey wine to a mostly Czech room.
