Some you know without knowing they were Czech: the writer whose surname became an adjective, the tennis player who redefined the women&#8217;s game, the chemist whose invention sits in millions of eyes every morning. Here are the people worth knowing before you visit \u2014 and where in Prague you can still stand in their footsteps.<\/p>\n<h2>Writers<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u5f17\u6717\u5179\u00b7\u5361\u592b\u5361<\/strong> (1883&ndash;1924) wrote in German, lived almost his whole life in Prague, and gave the world the word <em>Kafkaesque<\/em>. <strong>Jaroslav Ha&scaron;ek<\/strong> created the Good Soldier &Scaron;vejk, the most Czech character ever written. <strong>Karel &Ccaron;apek<\/strong> introduced the word <em>robot<\/em> in his 1920 play <em>R.U.R.<\/em><strong>Milan Kundera<\/strong> \u548c <strong>Bohumil Hrabal<\/strong> carried Czech literature through the communist decades.<\/p>\n<h2>Composers<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Anton&iacute;n Dvo&rcaron;&aacute;k<\/strong> wrote the New World Symphony while directing a conservatory in New York. <strong>Bed&rcaron;ich Smetana<\/strong> composed <em>M&aacute; vlast<\/em> after going deaf. <strong>Leo&scaron; Jan&aacute;&ccaron;ek<\/strong> built melodies from the rhythms of spoken Czech.<\/p>\n<h2>Artists<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u963f\u5c14\u65b9\u65af\u7a46\u590f<\/strong> defined Art Nouveau in Paris, then spent eighteen years painting the twenty vast canvases of the <em>Slav Epic<\/em>. <strong>Franti&scaron;ek Kupka<\/strong> was among the first painters anywhere to go fully abstract.<\/p>\n<h2>Scientists and inventors<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Otto Wichterle<\/strong> invented the soft contact lens &mdash; the first prototype built on his kitchen table with a children&rsquo;s construction set. <strong>Jaroslav Heyrovsk&yacute;<\/strong> won the 1959 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. <strong>Jan Evangelista Purkyn&ecaron;<\/strong> gave his name to cells in your brain and your heart.<\/p>\n<h2>Sport<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Martina Navr&aacute;tilov&aacute;<\/strong> won 59 Grand Slam titles. <strong>Emil Z&aacute;topek<\/strong> took three golds at the 1952 Olympics, including a marathon he had never run before. <strong>Jarom&iacute;r J&aacute;gr<\/strong> was still playing professional hockey in his fifties.<\/p>\n<h2>\u7ecf\u5e38\u95ee\u7684\u95ee\u9898<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who is the most famous Czech person?<\/strong><br \/>Internationally, probably Franz Kafka &mdash; though he wrote in German and would have found the question absurd. Within the Czech Republic, Emil Z&aacute;topek and Anton&iacute;n Dvo&rcaron;&aacute;k are held in comparable regard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Was Kafka Czech or German?<\/strong><br \/>Both and neither.
