The city of Terez\u00edn, founded at the end of the 18th century as a military fortress, is known today above all as a tragic symbol of the suffering of tens of thousands of innocent people. During World War II, it served as an internment camp for the Jewish population and became a transfer station on the way to the extermination camps.<\/p>\n

The town of Terez\u00edn , still surrounded by massive ramparts, lies near the confluence of the Elbe and Oh\u0159\u00ed rivers . At the end of the 18th century, Terez\u00edn was founded as a fortress . After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Hitler, the Nazis discovered the Small Fortress and established a police prison there in 1940. It served as a prison before ; in 1918, for example, the Bosnian Serb political activist Gavrilo Princip died here , who in 1914 in Sarajevo committed the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Franz Ferdinand d’Este and his wife \u017dofia.<\/p>\n

From 1941, a ghetto was established here , where citizens of Jewish origin were gradually deported. Here they were to be concentrated until the extermination camps in the east were ready for their final liquidation. After the liberation, the Terez\u00edn fortifications (Main and Small Fortress ), modern for its time, gradually became obsolete and fell into oblivion after losing its military function. In the consciousness of our and the world public, it came to life again, and in 1947, on the initiative of the government of the newly restored Czechoslovakia, the Terez\u00edn Memorial was established here in the places of suffering of tens of thousands of people, originally as the Memorial of National Suffering. It is the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its mission is to preserve the memory of the victims of racial and political persecution during the years of Nazi occupation, to develop museum, research and educational activities, as well as to care for the places associated with the suffering and death of tens of thousands of victims of the reign of violence.<\/p>\n

The Terez\u00edn Memorial specializes in preserving documents about the history of Nazi repressive facilities in the Czech Republic, especially in Terez\u00edn and Litom\u011b\u0159ice. To a lesser extent, it deals with the history of Terez\u00edn before the Second World War . Its collections can be divided into four areas: written documents, pictorial material, three-dimensional objects and works of art created directly by prisoners, as well as works of art by post-war and contemporary artists with an anti-war orientation.<\/p>\n

In the Small Fortress you will find a permanent exhibition on the history of the political prison . Furthermore, the Ghetto Museum was opened here in 1991 in the building of the former Terez\u00edn school , and in 1997 the former Magdeburg barracksand you can also visit the former crematorium at the Jewish Cemetery and other places of the fortress and the city that tell the story of recent history.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Memorial, you can also view the fortification system with underground passages , which reached a total length of 29 km, with the originator.<\/p>\n

The Ghetto Museum was established in the Terez\u00edn Memorial in 1991, which documents the fate of the Jews. This is exactly what awaits a big change according to the design of the winner of the international architectural competition, the museum exhibition will also undergo a big change. The commission named the project of Marcela Steinbach’s author team as the best proposal. The latter was named ” Tower of Light ” and is loosely inspired by the painting Moonscape by the young Terezin prisoner Petr Ginz . It is about light and hope, it brings contemporary life and presence to Terez\u00edn. At the same time, it solves operational issues and the large number of visitors to the museum and allows the former school to be kept as an exhibit , a space for the current concept of the exhibition. The project will be implemented in 2023 and 2024, during which time the museum will be closed.<\/p>\n
