Its current baroque appearance was created around 1720 after a fire in the castle and the Jewish quarter. It represents the last surviving example of a so-called Polish-type temple in our country.

The synagogue in Mikulov was built around 1550 , it got its current baroque look after a fire in 1719. The Upper Synagogue is the last prayer hall preserved here. It is significant mainly because it presents the only synagogue of the Polish type in our country – the impressive interior space is laid out in a quartet of domes, which are glazed into a four-column pillar in the middle of the hall.

It served religious purposes until shortly after the Second World War, when the Mikulov Jewish community, liquidated during the war , was temporarily restored. For decades, the synagogue fell into disrepair. Thanks to the Regional Museum in Mikulov, it was saved from demolition , and in the years 1977-1989 it underwent a demanding repair. Unfortunately, it was not possible to restore the destroyed building to its original form. The winter prayer hall and the crumbling annex with the staircase to the women’s gallery were demolished. The Hebrew inscriptions in the main hall were covered with new painting , the baroque tabernacle called aron-ha-kodesh, a unique work of the Austrian sculptor Ignác Lengelacher, was removed.

Rabbi Löw’s exposition

In the Upper Synagogue you will find an engaging exhibition dedicated to Rabbi Löw and Jewish education in Moravia. Rabbi Jehuda Löw ben Becalel (about 1525-1609) lived 20 years, partly also in Mikulov , as a Moravian regional rabbi. From the middle of the 16th to the middle of the 19th century, Mikulov was the religious, political and cultural center of all Moravian Jews , the local Jewish community was the largest and most numerous in Moravia.

The exhibition presents the entire issue in historical and social contexts, depicts the life course of Rabbi Löw , examples from his literary works, his influence on the Jewish community of Moravia, historical context – the position of the Jewish population in Moraviain the 16th century, the scholars who influenced him, the Renaissance environment of the city of Mikulov and the local Jewish community, the importance of Rabbi Löw’s work and his followers.

The second part of the exhibition depicts representatives of Jewish education in Moravia , religious and secular figures in the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods, Jewish Enlightenment (haskal), representatives of modern science after the acquisition of civil rights in the mid-19th century until their boom in the first half of the 20th century. On the ground floor, there is also a regional exhibition about the history and monuments of the Jewish community in Mikulov .

Project “10 stars”

During the years 2011–2013, the Mikulov Synagogue was reconstructed as part of the project ” 10 stars – revitalization of Jewish monuments in the Czech Republic “. For more than four centuries, Mikulov was an important spiritual, cultural and administrative center of Moravian Jews , and the Upper Synagogue (also called Stará, Dómská, Altschul) was the oldest of the local synagogues.

The main goal of the “10 stars” project was to return the synagogue to a form corresponding to the Baroque reconstruction from 1719-1723. A new winter prayer room was built according to the original floor plan , the staircase to the women’s gallery was also returned to its original place, the floor level was lowered, the stucco decoration was completely restored, including cartouches with Hebrew inscriptions . According toa new aron-ha-kodesh was built of the surviving photographs and paintings .

The synagogue is used for exhibitions and other cultural purposes (permanent exposition and seasonal exhibitions, concerts, lectures, workshops, projections) organized by the Regional Museum in Mikulov .

Husova 11

电子邮件:rmm@rmm.cz

1.4. – 30.4.
Friday – Sunday 09:00 – 12:00
13:00 – 16:00
1.10. – 30.11.
Friday – Sunday 09:00 – 12:00
13:00 – 16:00

Related Reading

Pinkas Synagogue in Prague – a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust

The Great Synagogue in Pilsen – the third largest in the world

Spanish Synagogue

Jewish synagogue and rabbinical house in Brandýs nad Labem

The Upper Synagogue dates from 1550, when Rabbi Löw worked in Mikulov.
