The grounds of Zvíkov Castle, which is located approx. 20 km from Písek, are permanently freely accessible all year round and pass through to the local wharf. On the ramparts there are nice views of the Vltava and Otava rivers, as well as their confluence.
The castle is accessible by the Royal Palace , which includes the Tuber Tower . The tour consists of one route without a guide. On the ground floor, there is an exhibition dedicated to local archaeological finds in three rooms . This is followed by a tour of the cellars and floors. The northeastern part of the palace consists of terraces on the site of the former royal rooms.
You will also see halls that have been preserved or reconstructed in the past . In the first room there is a model of the entire castle, on display are transfers of Renaissance paintings , historical furniture, an altar transferred from the former church of St. Nicholas in Podhradí. The tour ends with the castle chapel, which was built in the second half of the 13th century and is decorated with wall paintings from the 16th century . The sacristy is adjacent to the chapel. There is also a gallery accessible from the courtyard of the palace, where seasonal exhibitions are held.
Two-tailed lion tile
The tiles from the floor of the palace chapel of Zvíkov Castle are one of the extraordinary documents of court art and architecture of the time of Přemysl Otakar II. The German inscription on the tile says: ” They call me a lion, the kings of the Czech land wear me “. On the question of the origin of the two-tailed lion, historians are inclined to two interpretations – according to the first (from Dalimil’s chronicle) , Přemysl Otakar I acquired this emblem from Ota IV. for help in the fight against the Saxons in 1204. According to the second, Přemysl Otakar II started using it . , to distinguish himself as Margrave of Moravia from the one-tailed lion of his father Wenceslas I and at the same time to indicate his co-rule.
Bell from the underwater town
As of June 1, 2016, the sightseeing route in the Royal Palace was supplemented with a new distinctive exhibit. The village of Zvíkovské Podhradí lent the bell , which until this year was located in the local chapel of St. Wenceslas. It has an interesting history that is directly related to the history of the castle: the bell was accidentally discovered in 1946 near Zvíkov on the banks of the Otava River, then it remained suspended in the chapel of St. Wenceslas . After an expert inspection, the creation of the bell was dated to roughly the middle of the 14th century, and due to its age, further use was not recommended. The bell very likely comes from the Gothic church of St. Mikuláš, which was part of the town below the Zvíkov castle . The entire slope, where the individual buildings were laid out, is now under the water of the Orlická dam. The bell thus recalls the history of the defunct settlement, which is explained in a small accompanying exhibition.
