Astronomická věž a Barokní knihovna Klementinum
The Clementinum is not only Prague’s second-largest building complex, after Prague Castle, but also a site rich in history and culture.
Notable figures such as Albert Einstein lectured here, while Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed within its halls. Among its many treasures, the Clementinum houses what many regard as the most beautiful library in the world.
Within its 200,000 rare books are gems like Kepler’s works, including a handwritten dedication to his colleagues at Prague University.
Founded by Jesuits in 1556, the Clementinum takes its name from the former Dominican Monastery of St. Clement, established in 1227. Since 1775, it has been a center of meteorological research, boasting the longest continuous meteorological data collection series in Europe.
Discover the Clementinum
A guided tour offers a unique experience, taking visitors through parts of the former Jesuit college. The route includes the renowned Baroque Library, celebrated as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. While entry into the library itself is not permitted, visitors can admire its splendor from outside.
Next, explore the Meridian Hall, featuring historic astronomical instruments on the second floor of the Astronomical Tower. For over 300 years, a giant statue of Atlas bearing a sky full of stars has gazed down from the tower’s peak. This tower has seen many illustrious visitors, including Mozart himself, and continues to offer a breathtaking view of Prague.
The highlight of the tour is the climb to the gallery, which provides access to the observation point of the longest-running meteorological station in the Czech Republic.
