Svojanov Castle – a place where the Gothic and the Empire mix, that is, the Middle Ages and the 19th century

One of the oldest royal castles in the Czech Republic is the picturesque Svojanov Castle located above the valley of the Křetínka River. At the same time, it is the only castle in the republic whose architecture mixes Gothic with Empire, i.e. the Middle Ages with the 19th century. You can also visit the unique armorer’s house.

An exhibition of life in the castle in the second half of the 19th century is installed in the castle palace . The rooms are furnished in such a way as to give the greatest possible idea of how people really lived in the castle in the past. The most interesting spaces include the colonnaded hall , period kitchen , dining room, men’s and women’s salon . Beautiful ceiling paintings have been preserved in the Empire rooms. The tour also includes a complete collection of clocks or a restored Gothic garden , the only one of its kind in Central Europe.

The second tour circuit presents underground spaces with a stylish torture chamberand the Gothic Renaissance house of the armorers. It is here that exhibitions with a historical theme are held. The early Gothic cellar offers an exhibition reminiscent of castle rumors and legends. This circuit also includes the unique premises of the armorer’s house , which contains two large halls above each other and valuable attic spaces. The exhibited collection will introduce you to cold weapons from the 14th to the 16th century – axes, halberds, flails with sharp points or spears with iron tips. However, the armor became the dominant feature of the hall – among the unique items are the polished Austrian cavalry armor and the infantry Trabant half-armour. A ring shirt made of 16,000 rings is also a rarity. There are also samples of old games,which served the armorers for entertainment. Here you can see carved chess or cards on handmade paper . The armorer’s house was built sometime after 1471 by Ješek Svojanovský from Boskovice. Its construction is related to a legend about the administrator Rašín, who was very cruel to the workers building the house. That’s why he has to go around the castle on a fiery bull every midnight after his death.

Accommodation rooms for visitors to the castle are located on the first floor . They are also furnished with historical antique furniture. The tourist part of the hostel is focused on children’s educational stays, outdoor schools or camps. In addition to sightseeing tours, sitting in a restaurant and accommodation options, the castle also offers spaces for organizing wedding ceremonies, banquets, banquets and corporate events.

An interactive program with a fencing performance from the Gothic period is offered for schools . Fun competitions for children are part of the program. The appointment must be booked in advance. The castle hosts a number of cultural events, concerts, theater performances and fencing festivals.

From history : Svojanov Castle was founded in the middle of the 13th century by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II. to protect the land trade route connecting Litomyšl with Brno . The original castle bore the German name Fürstenberg and was very strong. To this day, the dominant feature is the cylindrical tower called the Hlaska. The castle is surrounded by a massive wall, the thickness of which reaches up to 8 meters in places. The original early Gothic palace is still preserved in the masonry of the current so-called New Building. The castle got its current form after a fire in 1842 . It was then partially rebuilt in the Empire styleand so today it is the only castle in our country whose architecture mixes Gothic with Empire, i.e. the Middle Ages with the 19th century. Since 1910, the castle has been owned by the town of Poličky, and in recent years it has been very sensitively restored.

Last tour one hour before closing time. In December until 15 December on weekends from 10 am to 5 pm. From December 15 to February 28, the castle is closed. Outside the stated time, a tour of the castle is possible for groups by agreement.
