Fifty kilometres north-east of Prague, on the grass airfield of the Mladá Boleslav Aeroclub, sits one of the most unusual museums in the Czech Republic. The Metoděj Vlach Aviation Museum is not a hall of static exhibits behind rope barriers — most of its aircraft still fly.
Who Was Metoděj Vlach?
Metoděj Vlach was a Czech aviation pioneer who built and flew his own aircraft in the years before the First World War, at a time when powered flight was barely a decade old anywhere in the world. The museum carries his name because it continues what he started: building flying machines by hand, from drawings, and then actually taking them up.
What You Will See
The collection holds more than 30 aircraft, spanning the earliest years of flight through to the mid-twentieth century. What sets it apart is the proportion that still works: of 28 historical aircraft — originals and replicas together — 22 are airworthy. Eleven fully functional replicas were built by the Metoděj Vlach Foundation itself.
Alongside the aircraft you will find period posters, documents, aviation trophies and engines, plus two flight simulators and a gyroscope trainer that visitors can use. It is a hands-on museum rather than a reverent one, and children tend to do better here than in most Czech museums.
Getting There
The museum opened in 2015 at the Mladá Boleslav airfield, roughly a one-hour drive from Prague. Mladá Boleslav is also reachable by direct bus and train from Prague; the airfield sits outside the town centre, so a taxi or a short drive is easiest for the final stretch. The town is best known as the home of Škoda Auto, which makes it straightforward to combine the two in one day.
When to Visit
Opening hours are seasonal and the museum sometimes closes the hangar for flying days, so check the current schedule before setting out — the official website is in Czech but translates cleanly. If you can time your visit to one of the historical airshows, the aircraft come out of the hangar and fly, which is the whole point of the place.
