Every winter during the Advent season, Prague revives one of its most charming historical traditions on the iconic Charles-Brücke: the manual lighting of its gas lamps by a traditional lamp-lighter. This short but atmospheric ritual turns an ordinary winter afternoon into a journey back to 19th-century Prague.
A Living Tradition in the Heart of Prague
Dressed in period costume, the lamp-lighter begins his walk shortly before sunset, carrying a long torch used to ignite each lamp by hand. One by one, the historic gas lamps along Charles Bridge glow to life, creating a warm, golden light that contrasts beautifully with the winter sky and the Vltava River below.

This tradition is not a staged performance but a genuine continuation of Prague’s historical street-lighting customs, preserved and celebrated during the Advent period.

When and Where to See the Lamp-Lighter
- Standort: Charles Bridge (Karlův most), Prague
- Jahreszeit: Advent period (approximately late November to December 23)
- Zeit: Around 4:00 PM (exact time may vary depending on daylight)
The lamp-lighter usually starts near Křížovnické Square on the Old Town side, walks toward Malá Strana lighting one side of the bridge, then returns along the opposite side.

Why Charles Bridge Is Unique
Charles Bridge holds a special place in world history when it comes to street lighting. Today, it is considered the only bridge in the world still illuminated entirely by gas lamps.
Prague first introduced gas street lighting in 1847, and by the early 20th century, the city had thousands of gas lamps. While most were later replaced by electric lighting, the historic lamps on Charles Bridge were carefully restored and reintroduced in 2002, preserving both their function and their original atmosphere.
Since 2010, the bridge has been fully lit by gas lamps once again, making this daily Advent ritual truly one of a kind.

A Favorite Moment for Visitors and Photographers
The lamp-lighter event is especially popular with:
- Visitors looking for authentic local traditions
- Photographers capturing Prague’s winter mood
- Couples and families enjoying the festive season
- Anyone seeking a quieter, more poetic Advent experience
The combination of fading daylight, historic architecture, and softly glowing lamps creates a cinematic atmosphere that feels timeless.
Tips for Experiencing It Best
- Arrive 15–20 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot
- Stand near the Old Town side for the best starting views
- Dress warmly — it can be cold and windy on the bridge
- Stay a few minutes after the lamps are lit to enjoy the fully illuminated bridge

A Small Moment That Captures Prague’s Soul
Unlike large Christmas markets or concerts, the lamp-lighter tradition is quiet and understated. Yet it perfectly captures what makes Prague special: respect for history, attention to detail, and an atmosphere that feels both romantic and real.
If you are visiting Prague during winter, especially in December, watching the lamp-lighter on Charles Bridge is a simple experience that leaves a lasting impression.
