For four evenings each October, Prague turns its own architecture into a screen. Signal Festival projects light art onto medieval facades, fills courtyards with installations you can walk through, and draws more than half a million people into the streets after dark. Almost all of it is free.

The festival traditionally runs Thursday to Sunday in mid-October. Confirm the exact dates on the official programme before booking travel — they are announced in late summer.
The Two Routes
Şehir merkezi
The headline route, taking in the Old Town, the riverbank and the streets around Náměstí Republiky. This is where the large-scale building projections go — churches, palaces and bridges used as projection surfaces. Start from metro Náměstí Republiky veya Staroměstská.
Vinohrady
The quieter, more experimental route through the residential streets of Vinohrady, usually with more interactive and sculptural work. Start from metro Náměstí Míru veya Jiřího z Poděbrad. If the centre feels impassable, come here instead — the art is just as good and the crowds are a fraction of the size.
How to Actually Enjoy It
- Go at 18:00, not 20:00. Between 19:00 and 22:00 the centre is genuinely packed. The first hour after dusk has the same installations and a fraction of the people.
- Pick a weekday. Thursday is the calmest of the four evenings; Saturday is the busiest by a wide margin.
- Do one route properly rather than half of each. They are on opposite sides of the centre and rushing between them wastes the evening.
- Dress for October standing around. Prague sits around 8–14°C in daytime and drops sharply after sunset. You will be outdoors and stationary for hours.
- Use the metro. Trams near the centre get diverted and the streets are closed to traffic in places.
Photographing the Festival
Projection work is bright but constantly moving, so shutter speed matters more than aperture — anything slower than 1/60 will smear the animation. Brace against a wall or railing rather than carrying a tripod, which is awkward in the crowds and blocked at some installations. What Else Is On in October
Signal falls in the middle of the best month of the Czech autumn. The parks are at peak colour, the summer crowds have gone, and 28 October brings Independence Day, when parts of Prague Castle open to visitors. Is Signal Festival free?
The outdoor installations — which is most of the festival — are free and need no ticket. Only the indoor Signal INSIDE zone charges, typically 100–200 CZK.
What time should I arrive?
Installations switch on at dusk, around 18:00. Arriving then rather than at 20:00 is the single biggest thing you can do for your evening.
Which route is better?
City Centre for the spectacular building projections, Vinohrady for a calmer walk and more experimental work. Do one, not both.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, and the interactive installations are popular with them — but go at 18:00. After 20:00 the centre is too crowded for small children comfortably.
Does it happen in bad weather?
Yes. The festival runs in rain; some installations are actually better on a wet night because the light reflects off the cobbles.
