Prague Christmas Old Town December Snowy

Prague at its emptiest and its cheapest. Cold, often grey, occasionally covered in snow that makes the Old Town look like a stage set.

January in Prague at a glance

Temperature -2 / +3 °C average low / high
Daylight About 8h 30m
Kalabalıklar Lowest of the year
Fiyatlar Annual low

January is the quietest month of the Prague year. The Christmas markets close on the 6th, the crowds vanish with them, and for a few weeks the city belongs to the people who live in it. Hotel rates fall to their annual low. It is genuinely cold — often below freezing — and the light is short and flat, but a clear frosty morning over the Vltava is one of the best sights the city offers.

Where to go this month

  • Indoor Prague — This is museum weather. The National Technical Museum, the Jewish Museum complex and the Municipal House all reward a slow visit. Daha
  • Steam and warmth — Czech spa culture makes sense in January. Thermal baths and wellness hotels are at their most appealing. Daha
  • Empty viewpoints — Petřín and Letná have no queues at all. Wrap up and take the funicular. Daha

Photography in January

Snow is never guaranteed, but when it falls Prague photographs like nowhere else. Shoot early — the sun rises around 08:00 and the light stays low and soft all day, which is flattering for portraits. For families, the empty Old Town Square before 09:00 is the shot everyone wants and almost nobody gets.

For family and couple sessions in January, a local photographer will know which spots hold the light at that hour — Kemal Onur Özman shoots families, couples and engagements across Prague and took many of the photographs on this site.

Proposing in January?January proposals work because you can have Charles Bridge almost to yourself at sunrise. Cold, yes, but there is no other month where that is possible. See our guide to 17 proposal locations in Prague for the full list with timings.

Practical tips for January

  • Layers and waterproof boots — the cobbles ice over.
  • Daylight is short; plan outdoor sights between 09:00 and 15:30.
  • Restaurants keep normal hours but some smaller places close for a winter break.
