Karlštejn also served as the model for Jaroslav Vrchlický’s theater play Noc na Karlštejn, based on which a musical film of the same name was made in 1973. Since 1918, Karlštejn has been owned by the Czech Republic and is open to the public.
Jewel of the Czech land – reconstruction of the area (2020 – 2022)
The National Monuments Institute, as the administrator of the state castle Karlštejn, will restore the dilapidated ground floor, basement and cellar spaces of the Imperial Palace as well as the rock cellar as part of the IROP project “Karlštejn Castle – the jewel of the Czech land” . The utility network will also be renovated. A modern visitor center will be established in the eastern part of the castle burgrave. The renovated spaces will be made available to the public, and new exhibitions are expected to open here. The utility garden on the southern park will also be renewed . Part of the project is also the acquisition of a time-lapse document that captures the progress of the castle’s rehabilitation and the creation of a virtual version of the castle before the reconstruction by Josef Mokr . Both documents will be shown to visitors in the newly made accessible Gothic cellar.
The restoration of the iconic Karlštejn will last until 2022 . The project is co-financed from structural funds from the Integrated Regional Operational Program. Visitors can use the services of the new visitor center in the upper basement of the burgrave . There are also new ticket offices and gift shops.
