Winter is the season Prague was built for. The Old Town looks its best under low cloud and lamp light, the markets turn the squares into something out of a storybook for six weeks, and from the middle of January the city belongs to the people who live in it again — cheap hotels, empty bridges, no queue at the Castle. It is also cold, dark by four in the afternoon and slippery underfoot, so the plan matters more than it does in May.

Prague gets snow most winters, but it rarely lies more than a day or two in the centre. When it does, drop everything and go outside — and if it does not, the frozen river and the low sun do most of the same work.

Does it snow in Prague at Christmas?
Usually not on the day itself. Prague sits low and inland, and December often gives grey, damp cold around freezing rather than lying snow. The best odds are in January and the first half of February, when a cold spell can leave the Old Town white for a day or two. Treat snow as a bonus, not the plan — and if it arrives, go straight to a viewpoint before it melts.
Is everything closed over Christmas?
Czech Christmas is on the evening of 24 December, so that afternoon is the real shutdown: shops close early, and most restaurants do not open at all. The 25th and 26th are public holidays — markets and major sights run, most shops do not. 1 January is the same again. Full detail in the public holidays guide.
When is the cheapest time to visit?
From about 7 January, once the markets pack up, until the end of February — excluding the New Year week itself, which is one of the most expensive of the year. Mid-January is the quietest the city ever gets. See Prague in January Und Prague in February.
How cold does it actually get?
A typical winter day runs from around −3°C overnight to 2–4°C in the afternoon. Cold snaps to −10°C happen most winters and rarely last more than a few days. The wind along the river is what people underestimate, not the number on the forecast.
Are the Christmas markets worth it?
Yes, with a caveat: Old Town Square between 17:00 and 20:00 in December is genuinely packed. Go early in the day, or use the smaller markets — Náměstí Míru, Jiřího z Poděbrad and the Castle courtyards — where the crowd is local. What is there to do when the weather is bad?
More than the summer version of the city offers, in fact. Concert halls and theatres are in full season, the big galleries run their winter exhibitions, and the city has a set of indoor pools and aquaparks that Czechs use all winter. Failing all that, a long lunch in a Czech pub is a legitimate afternoon.
Can you still do day trips?
Some. Many castles close from November to April or open only at weekends, so check before travelling. What works instead: the spa towns, Kutná Hora, and the mountains if you want actual snow. The day trips guide lists travel times and seasons.
