Ploština Monument near Valašské Klobouky – Remembrance of Tragedy and Resilience
Overview The Ploština Memorial, situated near Drnovice, underwent a comprehensive renovation from 2020 to 2023, transforming into a modern center for historical education and remembrance. It commemorates the tragic events of April 19, 1945, when Nazi forces burned down the settlement of Ploština and massacred its inhabitants, leaving a profound mark on the region’s history.
Memorial Features
- Visitor Center: A newly constructed elliptical visitor center integrates into the landscape with a green roof, replacing the former amphitheater. It houses a poignant exhibition by ethnographer Ondřej Machálek, detailing the tragedy and its aftermath, including testimonies and artifacts.
- Tragédie na Ploština Exhibition: Explores pre-war life in Ploština, the tragic events of 1945, and the community’s resilience in rebuilding their lives post-war. It features archival documents, photographs, and personal narratives from survivors recorded by the Memory of the Nation project.
- House No. 23: A reconstructed building showcasing daily life in post-war Ploština, offering insights into the community’s efforts to recover amidst the devastation.
