Overview
Explore the hidden marvels of the Zlutý Kopec Reservoirs, nestled beneath the serene park on Yellow Hill in Brno. These underground structures, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offer a unique glimpse into historic water management technology.
Unique Technical Monuments
Trinity of Reservoirs Experience a one-of-a-kind journey through three distinct reservoirs, each a masterpiece of engineering and architectural innovation. These reservoirs, protected as monuments since 2019, have been meticulously restored to preserve their original charm and functionality.
Reservoir 1 – 1874
Historical Water Management The first reservoir, constructed in 1874 by London builder Thomas Docwry, was pivotal in enhancing Brno’s water supply infrastructure. Its intricate design features handmade burnt bricks and a unique counter-vaulted floor system, reflecting English water management influences.
Reservoir 2 – 1894
Expansion and Innovation Built in 1894 under the direction of Brno engineer Emil Procházka, the second reservoir responded to the city’s growing water demands. With its concrete base and seventy semicircular arched pillars, it remains a testament to late 19th-century engineering prowess.
Reservoir 3 – 1917
Modern Utility Completed in 1917, the third reservoir consists of two monolithic concrete tanks supported by 87 pillars. Despite issues with water quality, these reservoirs continued to serve utility purposes until 1997, highlighting their enduring structural integrity.
