The museum, which is located in the unique premises of a reconstructed mountain synagogue from the 19th century, the highest in Bohemia. It offers several exhibition units that show the life of Czechs, Jews and Germans in Šumava.
In the main hall, right at the beginning of the tour, you can watch a short film that introduces you to the history and reconstruction of the synagogue . Then here you can see a model of the synagogue with a description of how each part once functioned, as well as the Jewish tabernacle (aron-ha-kodesh) from the no longer existing Pardubice synagogue, large-scale photographs of the Šumava villages liquidated after 1948, and other points of interest.
In the gallery, which was previously reserved for women, you will find an exhibition focused on the coexistence of Czechs, Jews and Germans in Šumava and interesting audio recordings supplementing individual events and fates of people connected with Hartmanice. In the attic, you can view the Šumava in old photographs as well as original fragments from the original building.
Concerts, lectures, theater performances and discussions with witnesses take place in the synagogue. Special one-day or multi-day projects are prepared for schools. In summer it is open every day except Mondays, in winter the operation is limited.
