Zažít město jinak — “experience the city differently” — is a one-day festival of neighbourhood street parties held across Prague every September. In 2026 it falls on Saturday 19 September.

Residents apply for their own street, the city closes it to traffic, and what appears is whatever that street decides: long shared tables, a barbecue, a stage with somebody’s band, a swap shop, chalk on the tarmac, a bar run out of a garage. There is no admission, no central programme to buy into, and no tourist infrastructure whatsoever.

Why It Is Worth Your Saturday

Most of what a visitor sees in Prague is either historic or built for visitors. This is neither. It is the one day when residential Prague — Vinohrady side streets, Holešovice blocks, Petřiny housing estates — is on display at street level, and everyone is in a good mood about it.

Practically, it is also the cheapest good food day of the year. Street kitchens sell at neighbourhood prices, not Old Town Square prices.

How to Find It

  • The map of participating streets goes up on zazitmestojinak.cz a week or two beforehand.
  • Pick a residential district rather than the centre — Vinohrady, Holešovice, Žižkov and Karlín usually have the densest clusters.
  • Things run roughly 10:00 to 22:00, but the afternoon is the busy, sociable part.
  • Almost nothing is in English. It does not matter; the format explains itself.
  • Take cash. Some stalls take cards, plenty do not.

If you are in Prague that weekend and the weather holds, walk a district instead of visiting a monument. You will not get a second chance until next September.
