Ask people who live in Prague which season is best and a surprising number say September. The summer heat has gone, the terraces are still open, the vinobraní take over the vineyards every weekend, and the coach crowds have thinned. October brings the colour and the Signal light festival; November brings fog, early dark and the cheapest hotel rooms of the year until the Christmas tree goes up.

September and early October are the best weeks of the year for the countryside: the colour is turning, the trails are dry and the castles have not closed for winter yet. Most shut from the start of November.

When does the autumn colour peak?
Usually the second half of October, and it holds for about two weeks. A warm September pushes it later; an early frost strips it fast. The parks on the hills — Petřín, Letná, Vyšehrad — turn a few days before the riverside ones.
Is September really the best month?
For a lot of people who live here, yes. You get late-summer warmth, open terraces, a wine festival most weekends and noticeably fewer people than in July. It is not a secret, though — September is the second busiest month after May, so book ahead.
What is burčák?
Part-fermented young wine, sold for a few weeks from late August. It is cloudy, sweet and tastes like grape juice, which is how people get caught out — it is still wine, and it keeps fermenting. Sold at every vinobraní.
Is November worth visiting?
If you want the city rather than the sights, yes — it is the emptiest and cheapest month of the year, the cafes and concert halls are in full season, and the fog is genuinely beautiful. If you need daylight and open castles, no.
Are the castles still open?
Through September and October, mostly yes; from the start of November, mostly no, or weekends only. Always check the individual castle before travelling. The castle guides list opening seasons.
What happens on the three public holidays?
28 September (St Wenceslas), 28 October (Independence Day) and 17 November (Freedom and Democracy Day). Shops and offices close; museums and sights generally open, and on 28 October the Castle state rooms open to the public. See the holidays guide.
