From the history of Hasištejn Castle
The time of the establishment of the Hasištejn castle (from the German Hassenstein) is not documented in writing, but it is adequately documented both by the composition of the castle and its architectural form. The son of the founder of Osek u Duchcov, Bohuslav Boreš had as his wife Agáta, the daughter of Fridrich I of Šumburk, who built the castle for King John of Luxembourg. The castle was of great strategic importance for the defense of the country. He protected the mountain passes through which important long-distance routes from Germany came to Bohemia.
During the following years, the castle belonged primarily to the Lobkovics. The well-known humanist and poet, Bohuslav Hasištejnský from Lobkovice, permanently resided here. After the childless death of Bohuslav, the castle began to fall into disrepair, the brothers divided the estate, but by 1606 most of it was confiscated by the royal chamber. When no one took care of the castle, after its demise it became a plentiful source of building material for the surrounding settlers.
At the end of the 19th century, the castle came into the possession of Emanuel Karsch. He had the rubble removed and the walls strengthened. He turned the former palace building into a restaurant and converted the highest tower into an observation tower. However, the restaurant is currently not in operation.
