The Jičín Synagogue is one of the few relatively well-preserved Jewish monuments in the Bohemian Paradise area. The history of the Jičín synagogue dates back to the late 1870s, the first documented report comes from May 1773, when the Star of David was placed on the roof of the synagogue.

The oldest written mention of Jewish settlement in the region of Northeast Bohemia dates from the second half of the 14th century. During the era of Albrecht of Wallenstein , his financier and court Jew of the Austrian emperors Jakob Baševi von Treuenburg , who is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Mladá Boleslav, worked in Jičín . The synagogue and the building of the Jewish school in Jičín are located in Židovská street on the northeastern edge of the historic core of the city, near the former walls.

The building itself is originally of baroque origin, from an architectural point of view it is a simple classicist building on a rectangular floor plan with a gable roof. Regular religious services were held here until the beginning of World War II . In January 1943 , less than a hundred Jičín Jews were taken by transport to Terezín , and subsequently in the same year, most of them were murdered by the Nazis in the Auschwitz concentration camp .

After the war, the synagogue was turned into a warehouse . In the 1960s, the synagogue was transferred to state property by forced sale. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was used to store the medicinal herbs of the state enterprise Léčiva. Today, you will find here the multimedia exposition ” Jewish writers, dramatists, critics “, located in the building of the Jewish school no. 100. The permanent exhibition is devoted to Jewish writers of the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.

The late Baroque synagogue with classicist decoration is now rightly one of Jičín’s gems . It was ceremonially opened to the public in June 2008. The synagogue is included in the Revitalization of Jewish Monuments in the Czech Republic project. The owner of the synagogue is the Jewish community in Prague .
