Kokořín Castle is located on a promontory of sandstone rock above the Kokořín Mine, north of the village of the same name, in the middle of a protected landscape area. According to legend, robber knights lived here, led by Petrovský from Petrovice, who were the terror of the whole area.
The castle on the spur of the sandstone rock above the Kokořín mine was probably built in the middle of the 14th century by Hynek Berka from Dubé. During the following centuries, a number of prominent nobles and noble families changed their owners, who did not maintain the residence very much, moreover, after the Thirty Years’ War, Emperor Ferdinand included Kokořín among the ” cursed” castles , which were no longer allowed to be repaired. In 1895, the castle became famous thanks to the Club of Czech Tourists. He presented it to the public as a model at the Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague and at the same time was responsible for making it partially available. When Václav Špaček
bought the Kokořín estate in 1896, only stone ruins with a dilapidated tower remained from the former medieval castle. After 1950, on the basis of land reform laws, the castle passed into the possession of the state, today it is once again the property of the Špačk family. According to legends, the derelict castle became a den of robber knights led by Petrovský from Petrovice, who were the terror of the whole area. During the reconstruction of the castle at the beginning of the 20th century, twenty-two human skeletons were found in the cellar under the tower . According to one theory, the skeletons belong to people who were abducted by the bandits and demanded a ransom for them, according to the second version, they are the robbers themselves, walled up deep in the castle cellar for punishment.
Between 1911 and 1918, the new owners had Kokořín, including the interiors , restored in a romantic spirit, with the help of leading historians A. Sedláček, Z. Winter, Č. Zíbrt and E. Sochor. It was one of the last romantic reconstructions in Bohemia. The castle is also open in winter by prior arrangement.
