About halfway between Pelhřimov and Tábor, in the slightly undulating region of Pacovsko, lies Kámen Castle. Originally a Gothic castle, it was built in the middle of the 13th century on a large rocky outcrop, after which it was also named. The first written mention is from 1316 and is related to a certain Nimír from Kámen.
Museum of historical motorcycles
The sightseeing circuit includes an exhibition of one-wheeled vehicles . Currently, they occupy a significant part of the collection of Jawa and ČZ machines from pre-war and post-war production. Motorcycles of other brands are also on display. Among them are, for example, Poustka (1925), Praga BD 500 (1928), Ogar 250 Standart (1936), Premier Sachs 98 (1939). Unique in today’s collection is the leading motorcycle from 1910 , which was built entirely by amateurs, and the two-cylinder Walter from 1913, originating from the Prague company of the same name. Since the 2018 season, the museum has been expanded to include a ČZ 500 motorcycle from 1938 and a unique Czech-Bohemia 600 motorcyclefrom 1927. In 2019, he enriched the Jawa 350/360 motorcycle in a special design for SNB, popularly called N anuk . The machine from 1964 was preserved with the original fairing.
Interactive program for children through the Castle one step at a time! takes place in the exhibition of single-wheel vehicles from July 1, 2018. An independent tour accompanied by parents or a guided tour for larger groups of more than 15 people takes place in the spirit of a motorcycle race. In addition to impressions and experiences, each participant will take home an original worksheet with interactive content and, finally, a diploma for 1st place.
The entrance fee is normal for route B – motorcycles: child over 6 years CZK 50, adult CZK 80, time allowance: 45-60 minutes, instructor: Ing. Zlata Vobinusková . Exposition of noble rooms
Other exhibitions are the Exhibition of housing and lifestyle in the 19th and early 20th centuries at the manor house with examples of living interiors and a historical exhibition in the Old Palace. Kamen used to be a hunting castle in the past. Recently, a unique collection of restored hunting trophies from the first half of the 19th century was acquired for the castle. A remarkable exhibit in the Knight’s Hall is the so-called wedding banner , which was made on the occasion of the marriage of Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf and Štěpánka Belgická in May 1881. The most interesting exhibit in the library is Müller’s map of Bohemia from 1720 . Until the middle of the 19th century, when the third military mapping was completed, this map was the largest and most detailed map of Bohemia.
Reconstruction of exhibitions
The Kámen Castle administration is planning to modernize all exhibits and build a new visitor center . The castle manager’s plan is to expand the exhibition of historic motorcycles to the entire eastern and northern wings on the first floor of the castle. The individual rooms are intended to provide a modern background for prototypes, rarities, salvaged beauty or sports motorcycles. In the main season of 2022, a completely new tour circuit was opened for visitors to Kámen Castle , which will take you to the reconstructed early Baroque chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows .
Castle park with natural alpine
An interesting feature is the castle park with an extensive natural alpine . Kámen Castle is a rock formation made of serpentinite (snake) that protrudes from the surrounding gneiss area. The highest point on the castle is 606 meters above sea level. The thermal rock and the favorable exposure of the garden, partially protected by the remains of the fortifications, create suitable conditions for a wider range of plants that would otherwise not grow at this altitude. In the park you will also find two memorial trees and an ornamental lake.
From the history of the castle
Originally a Gothic castle, it was built in the middle of the 13th century on a large rocky outcrop, after which it was also named. The first written mentions are from 1316 and 1318. From 1327 to 1504, Kámen was a royal feudal castle. From 1523, the castle was owned for almost 200 years by one of the branches of the important Czech Malovci family . In the middle of the 16th century, the Kámen estate reached its peak. The town of the same name and ten vassal villages belonged to the castle. The knight Jan Kryštof Malovec (held the castle from 1640), who had the castle rebuilt in the early Baroque style, made
the most significant mark in the history of the castle . The southern residential wing and the entrance tower were built (1673). On the western edge of the village, he had the early baroque chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows built, in which he established a family tomb. In the course of the 18th and 19th centuries, the owners of the castle and the estate changed rapidly and the castle lost its importance. After 1948, the castle was expropriated from the last owner, Antonín Fleissig . Kámen was declared a state cultural property in 1953. Between 1964 and 2002, Kámen Castle was established by ONV, later by the District Office in Pelhřimov. Since January 1, 2011, Kámen Castle is a branch of the Pelhřimov Highlands Museum , a contribution organization of the Vysočina Region.
