Lukov Castle is located in the southwestern part of the Hostýn Hills, about 2 km above the village of Lukov near Zlín. Due to its area, it is one of the largest castles in Moravia, today an extensive ruin of a Gothic castle with a well-preserved pillar bridge and entrance gate.

The castle has an extensive history and is surrounded by a number of legends , the most famous of which is about the buried treasure of the Templars , which is hidden in the underground passages. Lukov Castle is set in unique nature and with its charm evokes the feelings of times long gone. Around the castle you can see rock walls called Králky , the memorable Valdštejn oak or the Bezedník pond hidden in the woods below the castle. During the year, several events take place at the castle, which reawakens the castle to new life.

The origins of Lukova Castle date back to the first third of the 13th century. Fragments of stone elements date from this period, which prove the work of the stonemasons of the important Velehrad building smelter. At the beginning of the 14th century, it was in the possession of the powerful Šternberk family . During the Czecho-Hungarian wars, the castle was captured and burned down by the troops of the Hungarian king Matthias Corvín . At this time, the so-called lower castle with the St. John’s tower was probably created. In 1511, the Lukov manor is bought by the Kunštát family . From 1548, the next owners of the Lukovo castle were the Nekš family from Landek , under whose ownership an extensive Renaissance reconstruction and adaptation to the then requirements for a comfortable life took place.

The last heiress of the Lucrecia family therefore became the focus of interest of many noble cavaliers. He became her second husbandAlbrecht Václav Eusebius of Valdštejn , who after her death in 1614 fell into his lap with an extensive property.

During the Thirty Years’ War, Lukov was several times the center of the uprising of the local population, the so-called Wallachians, against the Habsburgs . The Swedes also captured Lukov Castle without a fight, they garrisoned it for almost three months, and when they left, they looted it and set it on fire. At that time, the castle was held by the Minkvics from Minkvicburk , who, however, struggled with huge debts and foreclosures for years. Jan Josef z Rottal acquired the Lukov manor from the indebted Minkvics , who, however, soon sold it to the Seilerns . The castle lost its importance and the lordly offices were gradually moved from it down to the village until it was abandoned at the end of the 18th centurycompletely and became a source of cheap building material.

Attempts to save the castle grounds began in the last quarter of the 20th century. Since 1983, archaeological research has been carried out here almost continuously , and since 1987, a gradual restoration of the monument has been started. Members of the Brontosaurus Movement and the Association of Friends of Lukova Castle take part in it . Thanks to the long-term work of volunteers, the castle was transformed from a neglected ruin into a sought-after tourist destination , where educational programs aimed especially at children and young people take place.
