Rabí Castle, which was built at the beginning of the 13th century, is the king of all Czech castles. If you carefully measured the length of its buildings and walls with cannon bastions, you would count an incredible three kilometers.

The ruins of the castle and the village are located 9 km northeast of Sušice on a rocky hill near the river Otava , at an altitude of 478 m above sea level.

The medieval castle with Romanesque foundations played an important role in the past of Bohemia. He protected the trade route between the towns of Sušice and Horažďovice and the rich gold deposits on the Otava River. Because of this, the castle often became the target of attacks. The Hussite warrior Jan Žižka even tried to conquer it twice – and paid for it with his second eye. There are no written records of the first owners of the castle. According to the most recent assumption of historians, the castle was probably founded by the German Counts of Bogenand later used by the Wittelsbach family, because the territory of Sušick belonged to Bavaria from 1124 to 1273. At the end of the 13th century , this territory probably became part of the Czech state again. It is assumed that the lords of Velhartice acquired the castle at this time. The first documented owners (court file from 1380) were the Švihov family from Rýzmberk . This family owned Rabí for almost 200 years, during which the castle was built to its final form.

In the castle hall there is an exhibition of medieval tiles with a replica of late Gothic tiled stoves, in the summer season the castle prepares various cultural events for visitors.

The castle offers two tours (tours of the castle in Czech, German and English).

I. Palace circuit – a tour of the preserved rooms of the Břeňk Palace with 3 models of the castle, archaeological findings, with a unique exhibition of stove tiles and finally a visit to the extensive castle cellar with a famine chamber and an audio-visual about the conquest of the castle by the Hussites.
II. the Tower circuit – a tour of the oldest part of the castle with a 26 m high South French-type observation tower (Donjon), a 60 m deep well, a refrigerator and on the way back a look into the lowest part of the cellar, into the prison dungeons.
Below the castle, we recommend visiting the underground of the Church of the Holy Trinity, converted into an exhibition space . (open in July and August)

In the courtyard of the castle you will find a shooting range with  archers (the opportunity to try shooting with various bows, crossbows, trebuchets, slingshots or throwing knives) and a stand with non-traditional refreshments in the form of pancakes, organic ciders, bee products and other delicacies prepared from local ingredients.

Prepared cycle paths , the nearby Otava river and a dense network of tourist signs will fulfill your expectations, whether you go to Rabí on foot, by bike or by boat on the Otava river . The surroundings of the castle offer many other opportunities for excursions. Horaždovice , Sušiceand Žichovice, connected by a single railway line, offer old monuments, museums, sports activities and wonderful natural scenery to explore. Rabí Castle is also part of the Šumava Triple Castle Association , which unites Kašperk and Velhartice castles .
