Seven small Prague hotels where the building and the rooms are part of the reason to stay.
Prague’s old quarters are full of Renaissance townhouses and Baroque palaces too small and too oddly shaped for a chain hotel. Many now hold hotels with a couple of dozen rooms or fewer, each with its own layout and history. The densest cluster is in Malá Strana, under the castle, where the streets go quiet once the day-trippers leave. They suit couples, repeat visitors and anyone who prefers a name at reception to a queue.
Every hotel below is one we have written about in detail on Prague Hints. Most have between eight and 26 rooms, ranging from four-star townhouses to five-star addresses. Six sit on the Malá Strana side of the river, because that is where so many of Prague’s small historic hotels are; we have added one Old Town pick for those who prefer the east bank.

1. Golden Well (Hotel U Zlaté studně)
U Zlaté studně 4 · Malá Strana
Golden Well sits directly beneath Prague Castle in a building with 16th-century roots. Its 17 rooms and two suites lean into the history, with historic artworks, bespoke furniture and patterned floor tiles, while marble bathrooms and climate control keep things comfortable. It feels more like a grand townhouse than a hotel.
The restaurant, Terasa U Zlaté studně, is half the reason to stay: its terrace looks over the red roofs of Malá Strana to the Vltava, and the seasonal menu is built on local produce. The concierge desk runs around the clock. The lanes up here are steep, so if you are driving, ask about the hotel’s parking arrangements before you set off.

2. Aria Hotel Prague
Tržiště 9 · Malá Strana · 5-star
Aria Hotel Prague takes one idea and carries it through every corridor: music. Each floor follows a genre, from jazz and opera to classical and contemporary, and each of the 51 rooms and suites is dedicated to a musician or composer. Rooms have high-end audio and Apple TV, with a library of more than 5,000 CDs and DVDs on call.
The perk we like most is guests’ private access to the Vrtba Garden, a terraced Baroque garden about as peaceful as central Prague gets. CODA, the restaurant, serves an international menu on a rooftop terrace facing St Nicholas Church and the castle; ask for a terrace table when you book. Charles Bridge and the castle are both about ten minutes on foot.

3. Three Storks
Valdštejnské náměstí 8 · Malá Strana · 5-star
Three Storks occupies the House at Three Storks, a Renaissance building on Wallenstein Square restored by AI DESIGN together with Eva Jiřičná Architects. Protected historic details sit alongside minimalist contemporary furniture: the pick for anyone who loves old buildings but not old-fashioned rooms. With just 20 rooms, it stays calm.
The restaurant mixes Czech classics with international dishes, and the lobby bar is the place for a glass of local wine after a day on your feet. The Wallenstein Gardens are a short walk away. Pets are welcome, and a meeting room for up to 30 is handy for a small family gathering or team trip.

4. Domus Balthasar Boutique Hotel
Mostecká 5 · Malá Strana · 4-star
Domus Balthasar Boutique Hotel has just eight rooms in a Baroque house built on medieval foundations, about 50 metres from Charles Bridge. With so few guests, it is quiet and personal, the closest thing here to staying in a private house.
Rooms have heated floors, welcome in a Prague winter, plus satellite TV and full bathrooms. Families or two couples together should ask about the deluxe attic studios, which connect into a family suite. Mostecká is the busy street between Charles Bridge and Malostranské náměstí, so head out early to have the bridge almost to yourself. The hotel is LGBT-friendly.

5. Pytloun Kampa Garden Hotel Prague
U Sovových mlýnů 9 · Kampa, Malá Strana · 4-star
Pytloun Kampa Garden Hotel Prague is on Kampa, the island between the Vltava and the Čertovka millstream, and the setting is what sells it. Charles Bridge, the Lennon Wall and the Church of Our Lady Victorious, home of the Infant Jesus of Prague, are all close, and the hotel has views of historic landmarks.
Kampa is calmer than the streets around the bridge and has its own riverside park. That, plus a policy that allows pets (for a nightly fee), makes it a practical choice if your dog is coming too. Ask for a room facing the landmarks when you book.

6. Boutique Hotel Klárov Prague
U Železné lávky 567/12 · Malá Strana · 4-star
Boutique Hotel Klárov Prague sits in Malá Strana directly below the castle complex, with 26 rooms and suites. Interiors are light and contemporary inside a historic building, and many rooms look out over the city’s skyline.
The garden hosts intimate weddings, engagements and private celebrations, so keep it in mind if you are planning a proposal. Four-legged guests are welcome, and there is a cosy lounge for the evening. Charles Bridge and the Jewish Quarter across the river are both within walking distance.

7. Hotel U Zlatého jelena (Golden Deer Hotel)
Celetná 11 · Staré Město · 4-star
Hotel U Zlatého jelena (Golden Deer Hotel) is our Old Town pick, on Celetná a short walk from Old Town Square. The building dates from the 14th century, and rooms mix antique furniture with metal sculptures, a combination no chain would think of.
There are 23 rooms with 60 beds between them, so some sleep more than two, useful for families or friends sharing. Café U Zlatého jelena is on site, and pets are allowed for a small nightly fee. Celetná is a busy pedestrian street on the old Royal Route, so light sleepers should ask for a room away from the street.

Practical tips
- Book early. A hotel with eight or 20 rooms fills up fast, so reserve well ahead for weekends, the Christmas markets and late spring.
- Ask about the specific room. In historic buildings no two rooms are alike. Check the view, the floor and whether it faces the street.
- Pack for cobbles. Malá Strana is steep and cobbled, and cars cannot always stop at the door. A smaller suitcase makes the last stretch easier.
- Check stairs and lifts. Old houses can mean narrow staircases or small lifts, so ask in advance if mobility is a concern.
- Travelling with a pet? Three Storks, Pytloun Kampa Garden, Klárov and the Golden Deer accept pets according to our information. Fees vary, so confirm when booking.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a boutique hotel in Prague?
There is no official category. In practice it means a small hotel, usually under 30 rooms, in a building with its own character and a design not copied from a chain, often a converted townhouse or palace.
Which area is best for a boutique hotel in Prague?
Malá Strana has the most choice and atmosphere, and it gets quiet after dark. The Old Town is livelier and closer to shops and restaurants. Pick the Old Town for late nights and Malá Strana for calm evenings.
Which boutique hotels in Prague suit families?
Small hotels have few family rooms, so ask early. Domus Balthasar’s deluxe attic studios connect into a family suite, and the Golden Deer has 60 beds across 23 rooms.
Do I need a car to stay in Malá Strana?
No. The area is best explored on foot and well served by trams, while parking in the historic centre is scarce. If you are driving anyway, ask the hotel in advance; Golden Well, for example, offers parking arrangements.
