Hukvaldy Castle is located on an elongated hill, 150 meters above the village of the same name, known primarily as the birthplace of the world-famous music composer Leoš Janáček. In addition to the tour of the castle and the nature reserve, which, unlike the castle itself, is accessible all year round, it is possible to visit the Composer’s Memorial in Podoboří.

Hukvaldy Castle is one of the largest castles in Moravia . On the hill above the village of Hukvaldy , in the middle of a forest full of fallow deer and mouflons, the extensive castle fortifications, visible from afar, rise. From its tower there is a beautiful view of the wider surroundings of the Beskydy ridges , the town of Kopřivnice , Příbor and through Fryčovice to Ostrava .

The first mention of the Hukvald Castle dates back to 1285, its origins go back to about the middle of the 13th century. The German counts of Hückeswagen are considered to be the founders of Hukvald . The first of these, the knight Arnold of Hückeswagen, came to the Czech lands at the invitation of the Czech king Přemysl Otakar I. to mediate the marriage of Přemysl’s daughter Anežka with the English king Henry III. Although the marriage ultimately did not take place, Arnold remained in the diplomatic service of the Czech monarch and received territory from him in the northeast of Moravia. And it was probably here that one of Arnold’s descendants founded Hukvaldy Castle sometime after 1250.

The best-preserved building in the castle is the chapel of St. Ondřeje , built at the end of the 17th century. The chapel was the only building in the castle that was restored and maintained in the 19th century. It is dedicated to the patron saint of the local region, St. Ondrej. The chapel has excellent acoustics, which is why various concerts and performances take place here. They are also organized in the so-called log or motto , which is actuallyadvanced fortifications , built apparently sometime during the 15th century. In the past, a military garrison was based here and a serf prison was also located here . In the 60s of the 20th century, shackles and chains were found here, with which prisoners were once tied by the hands and feet to the walls. Since 1994, the grounds of the Hukvald castle with the adjacent field have regularly been the scene of the Janáčkovy Hukvaldy International Music Festival at the beginning of the summer . A lot of events are organized at Hukvaldy Castle during the season – burning of witches, treasure hunts, performances by swordsmen, spooky night, conquest of Hukvaldy Castle, vintage, Ondrejská puť and others.
