Prague does not decorate for Christmas so much as re-light itself. From late November the city switches on strings of warm white bulbs along whole streets, and some of the best walking of the season costs nothing at all. Here are the streets worth planning an evening around, and when the lights actually go on.

When the Lights Go On
Prague’s Christmas lighting is switched on at the same moment the Old Town Square tree is lit: 28 November 2026 at 16:30. The street decorations stay up into early January, usually coming down shortly after the markets close on 6 January 2027. Sunset in December falls between 15:55 and 16:15, which means the lights carry the city for the longest part of the day — more on that in when the city turns on the lights.
Pařížská Street
The most photographed lighting in Prague, and deservedly so. Pařížská runs from Old Town Square towards the river, lined with art nouveau facades and luxury storefronts, every tree wrapped tightly in white strands. Walk it from the square towards the Vltava at around 17:00, when the sky still holds a little blue and the lights have already taken over.
Old Town Square
The tree is the centrepiece, but the square’s baroque facades bathed in gold are the reason to stand still for a minute. This is also the most crowded spot in the city between 17:00 and 20:00 — go early or late.
Celetná and Na Příkopě
Celetná connects Old Town Square to the Powder Tower under strings of vintage-style bulbs, with the smell of roasting chestnuts most of the way. Na Příkopě continues towards Wenceslas Square with festive shopfronts and, most evenings, carollers somewhere along its length.
Národní Třída
A canopy of warm white lights over a wide boulevard, and a good place to break the walk — Café Louvre sits halfway along, and it has been serving since 1902.
Nerudova and Malá Strana
For a quieter glow, cross the river. Nerudova climbs towards the Castle between baroque house signs and old lamps, and the narrow lanes of Malá Strana keep their lighting deliberately restrained. Less spectacle, considerably more atmosphere. Streets that shine the brightest compares them side by side.
The Vltava Riverbank
Streetlights reflecting off the water with Charles Bridge in the frame is the postcard shot, and the embankment below the bridge is where to take it from. Cold and windy — worth it anyway.
