Although it is not one of the largest or most beautiful castles, it does not boast a huge park, it has become a popular destination for many hikers and adventurers. This mysterious castle will interest visitors mainly because of the legend about the hole in hell and about the convict who was lowered into it.
The entrance to hell is said to be guarded by a terrible black monk without a face, but to this day it is not known exactly where this gate to another world is located. Someone is looking for her in the local chapel, another in the castle well, each according to their imagination.
Houska Castle near Mách Lake probably stood during the reign of Wenceslas I. No one knows who built the castle, why at all and why in this place, where there were no borders, trade routes and even nothing to protect. This also adds to the mystery of the castle. The castle was opened to the general public only in 1999. Today, the castle is already 90% accessible, so almost everything in the interior has been repaired.
A peculiarity is the rock that permeates the entire castle. You can see parts of it both outside in the courtyard and inside the castle. The entire courtyard is blessed with amazing acoustics, thanks to which Houska has become a sought-after venue for various concerts .
In the surroundings of Houska, you can see beautiful nature that invites you to go for a bike ride or a walk. You can visit many interesting castles nearby, such as Bezděz , Ralsko , Kokořín and Zkamenelý zámek . You can end your visit to the local region by refreshing yourself in the Mách lake .
