About 8 km from Turnov, on Malá Skála, the Vranov rock castle, better known today as the Pantheon, stands on a steep cliff above the Jizera river. With a length of almost 400 meters, it is considered the most complicated rock castle in Bohemia.
A marked sightseeing circuit will take you to almost every corner of the castle. Following a narrow rock staircase, you can climb to the highest point of the sandstone cliff with a wonderful view of the surroundings – the Tower of the Cross . The castle gallery offers interesting exhibitions.
Vranov Castle was founded in the 15th century as a Gothic fortress, and in its history it has succeeded a whole series of lords – Vartemberka, Smiřická and Valdštejna . After 1802, one of its owners , František Zachariaš Römisch , had it rebuilt into the Pantheon – a monument to famous people of the time. He built not only the well-known summer house in the shape of a chapel into the sandstone rock massif, but also dozens of monuments and commemorative plaques. Vranov – Pantheon became soa unique combination of the ruins of a medieval castle with the spirit of European romanticism of the 19th century.
