Prague is a good base. Gothic castles, UNESCO towns and the sandstone rock cities of Bohemian Paradise are all reachable by train or bus, most of them in under two hours and most for under 200 CZK return. Practical tips
- Most castles close from November to March or open weekends only. Always check before travelling.
- Buy train tickets on the day — Czech regional trains are cheap and rarely sell out.
- Karlštejn and Kutná Hora are busiest at weekends. Go on a weekday if you can.
- Český Krumlov deserves a night. Three hours each way makes a day trip rushed.
