The History of Choustník Castle

Choustník Castle was built in the 13th century by the noble family of the Vítkovci. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, and various noble families lived there, including the Rožmberks and the Schwarzenbergs.

On Choustník Hill, about 20 km from Tábor in South Bohemia, lies the extensive ruins of the castle of the same name. Today you can see the massive walls and two quadrangular palace towers. One of them is modified as a lookout tower with a good view of Soběslavsko and Táborsko.

The early Gothic castle was founded in the years 1262 – 1282, as a joint work of two sons of Beneš from Choustník . This created a rare type of castle in the Czech lands with two castle cores in the form of separate residential palaces. A hundred years later, Choustník was an important stronghold of the Rožmberks , who made it an advanced gateway to central Bohemia. Further development of the castle took place only in the 15th century, when a massive fortification with two circular artillery bastions was built around it, which proved its worth during the Hussite unrest . The castle remained unconquered .

In 1597, Petr Vok sold the last Rožmberka castle with a brewery, hops, a mill, a sawmill, a yard, gardens, woodsheds, a sheepfold and eight villages to Jiří Homut from Harasov. However, he let the castle fall into disrepair, and since 1614 it has been listed as deserted in the records. This was followed by a period of changing owners, which lasted until 1932, when the then owners ceded the castle to the Czech Republic Club. tourists. It is currently owned by the Choustník municipality.
